Dyslexia Screening

Dyslexia Screening

Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year and in accordance with Senate Act 217, the School City of Whiting will provide annual universal screening for dyslexia risk factors to all students in grades K-2nd. Students in grades 3-12 identified with possible dyslexia characteristics will be screened through a referral process. The universal screening process will assess students in the following six areas:

  • Phonemic awareness

  • Sound symbol recognition

  • Alphabet knowledge

  • Decoding skills

  • Rapid naming skills

  • Encoding skills

Parents of students, identified as at-risk for dyslexia after the universal screening is completed, will be notified of their child’s testing results. Parents will be asked to grant permission for further screening and if needed students will receive targeted intervention services. Additional information regarding dyslexia can be found in the links from documents.
